03/02/26 🀄 How to Build Stronger Mah Jongg Hands

🧨Happy Mah Jongg Monday!

The National Mah Jongg League and the American Mah Jongg Association are two separate organizations, and knowing the difference can make things a lot clearer.

The League publishes the official annual card and sets the rules of the game. If you need to order a card or check on an order, you’ll want to contact the National Mah Jongg League directly. Just so you know, they don’t respond to email. The best way to reach them is by phone at 212-246-3052.🙃

The American Mah Jongg Association exists for players.

If you play American Mah Jongg, this is your home.

We care about what happens at your table. We want you to understand the card, play with confidence, make smart decisions, and stay connected to players who care about the game the way you do.

The League governs the card.
We serve the players who use it.

🖥️ Why Good Players Still Lose — And How to Fix It

If you’ve ever walked away from a game thinking, “I knew better… I just wasn’t sure in the moment,” you’re not alone.

Most players know the game.
It’s those in-between decisions that get tricky.

Inside the Mahj Insiders Club, members receive a bonus email every Wednesday with one full game from an experienced player, talking through decisions in real time. You hear the pauses, the pivots, and the moments when more than one choice could work.

This month, we’re featuring Tiffany Kraght, a recent Destination Mah Jongg tournament winner known for her flexible, adaptive style. She stays open longer than most players and adjusts quickly as new information appears.

The first game in this new round is released this Wednesday.

Club members receive a full game each week. If you’d like to watch all four from the beginning, you’ll want to be inside before Wednesday.

We also recorded a short interview so you can get to know Tiffany and how she approaches the game.

💡 Table Wisdom

History, Lore, & Hidden Gems: Playing with Blanks
Blanks are one of the most debated changes in modern Mah Jongg. Their rise comes from the growing interest in beautiful tile sets, many of which include up to eight blanks meant to replace lost tiles. Newer players noticed the extra tiles and began using them in creative ways.

Ways Players Use Blanks
Many tables now treat blanks as special tiles. You’ll see two common approaches.

  • Super Jokers act like Jokers that can also fill a pair.

  • Zombie Tiles let you swap a blank for a matching discarded tile.

Players adopt one or both of these as table rules when playing with blanks.

Supporters say blanks make it easier to complete the singles and pairs that appear throughout the card. They also feel the game moves a bit faster and offers more ways to win.

Unsure if You’re Team Blank or Team Traditional? Try Both Styles
Deciding where you stand takes a little practice. Play a few games with blanks and a few without. Notice how often the blanks help your hand and whether the rule set fits your group’s style. Your table will settle into the approach that keeps your games fun and fair.

Beginner’s Tip: Blanks make the game easier for beginners. The ability to use a blank in a pair, or to exchange one for a discard, keeps your hand in play. The important thing is to learn the American Mah Jongg League rules first and understand that blanks are a variation, commonly called a “table rule.”

Advanced Moves: If you’ve tried blanks and love them, enjoy yourself! You already know the game, so blanks may introduce a variation that makes it more interesting. If they lose their appeal, just flip back to standard play.

Friendly note: Blanks are a house rule, not part of official League play. We’re sharing this for awareness only and won’t be offering strategy or instruction around blank variations.

🖐🏻 A Hand to Play

Which Hand Gives You the Best Chance of Winning?

Picking the best hand and having a solid backup is key in American Mah Jongg. The end of the Charleston is the ideal moment to make that choice, because waiting too long can cost you tiles and momentum.

You’re holding the tiles below. Which hand gives you the strongest chance of winning as you move out of the Charleston? Review your options, trust your read of the card, and cast your vote.

🀄 Tile Spotlight: Today’s Hand to Play uses West Wind Mahjong’s OSU® - Oklahoma State University® tiles. March Madness is around the corner, which makes these tiles especially fun.

⬅️ Last Week’s Question
Auntie, Players show up without RSVP and bring guests, causing people who did RSVP to leave or rotate. The organizer will not address it. What should we do?
- Cathy G.

🥠 Auntie’s Advice 🥠

🗨 My friend, before deciding what to do, it helps to ask a simpler question: why is this bothering me? Extra guests and table rotations are what this group allows. The frustration usually comes from expecting an RSVP to guarantee a seat and uninterrupted play.

In this group, it doesn’t. Rotating or waiting is simply how overflow is handled. Some players are fine with that. Others aren’t.

You don’t need the organizer to change, and you don’t need to correct the guests. You have another option. If structure matters to you, you can step up and host your own game with clear numbers and expectations.

📢 Readers’ Responses 📢

🗨  I never turn anyone away. I simply say have a seat and when I am done I will fit you in.
- Catharine G.

🗨  I’m someone who does that at our club often. I’ve never brought a guest but I would hope that if I did they would be welcomed. I only RSVP when I know I can come for sure but many times my schedule changes and if I’m free then I will drop in. I love Mah Jongg but I don’t love rigid people, leave that to Bridge…. I’m not sure why someone would leave. We play 2, 3, and 4 player Mah Jongg!
- Cindy

🗨  This is really a general etiquette issue, not just a Mah Jongg issue.  Showing up anywhere without an RSVP is disrespectful and bringing guests along makes it worse. If it's not addressed it will continue and it's not fair to those who RSVP, especially if it's causing them to leave. My suggestion would be to very calmly tell them that, since they weren't expected, perhaps they could just play among themselves since those who RSVP'd were already seated.  If the organizer won't address it in person, maybe she could send a note to the entire group to remind people to be sure to RSVP.

From 16 to 75+ in age, in a tiny mountain town with a population of less than 400 we gather first time players with 50+ years players for weekly games at 9000 ft. If we mess up we blame it on the altitude. In the winter months, we are lucky to gather a table of 4 but thanks to our summer visitors, we had 12 this week.

The best gift is the gift of MahJong friends. Sending out best wishes for fabulous tile picks throughout the new year from Midlothian, Virginia.

Fun time playing Mahjong with Terry Jacobi as she turns 102 years old. She plays weekly and is quite skilled at the game. Lots and lots of wins over the years.
