Which Three Tiles to Pass (on the first Charleston pass)?
🟨⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️ A ⭕️ 9 Crak, 5 Dot, North (779 Votes)
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 B ⭕️ 1 Bam, 9 Dot, North (3280 Votes)
⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️ C ⭕️ North, Green Dragon, 9 Dot (262 Votes)
🟨🟨⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️ D ⭕️ 1 Bam, 9 Crak, 9 Dot (1158 Votes)
Explanation:
✅ Correct Answer: B) 1 Bam, 9 Dot, North
This choice passes two Odd tiles in different suits, and the only Wind in the hand, while keeping the Dragon for possible use later.
It leaves you flexible, keeping options open in the 2468 Section or the Consecutive Run Section, depending on how the rest of the Charleston unfolds. The 1 Bam and 9 Dot do not interfere with a Consecutive Run because they fall outside the range needed for the other tiles in those suits.
❌ Answer A) 9 Crak, 5 Dot, North
This pass gives up the 9 Crak, which could support a Consecutive Run in Craks, and the 5 Dot, which could do the same in Dots. It commits too strongly to 2468 hands without a backup plan if the 2s do not appear.
❌ Answer C) North, Green Dragon, 9 Dot
Passing the North is sound, but it is too early to pass a Dragon. Flowers and Dragons should usually be held until a hand begins to take shape, and even then passed with care.
❌ Answer D) 1 Bam, 9 Crak, 9 Dot
This is a strong pass for your opponents. It gives away a pair of 9s and a 1, which could support a 13579 Section or any hand using like numbers. You generally want to avoid passing two of the same number unless you have no other reasonable option.
Beginner’s Takeaway:
“Stay calm can carry on.” A new card is not a reason to change your habits. Play the early passes the same way you always do, then let the card help you narrow your choices later.
Advanced Moves:
Always strategize the different directions a deal can go. Pass tiles that do not support those paths, while avoiding passes that give too much help to the table.
