Which tiles to pass? (at the start)

Explanation:

ANSWER:

✅ Correct Answer: A) West, 6 Crak, 6 Bam

This opening rack is a real mixed bag, so it’s totally understandable that it’s hard to choose a direction right away. You’ve got possibilities in several Sections: 13579, Consecutive Run, and even Winds and Dragons, so the goal here is to keep your options open while letting go of tiles that don’t support multiple paths.

Let’s walk through the logic.

Your 1, 2, 3 Dot combo gives you a solid start for a few hands:

  • Consecutive Run, Line 4 (FFF 123 4444 5555), using the 4 Crak and 5 Bam.

  • Winds and Dragons, Line 2 (FF 123 DD DDD DDDD).

For 13579, there are several hands you could play. The tiles don't support the NEWS hand, so the West can go.

Your Dragons also deserve to stay. They support hands in Winds and Dragons, Consecutive Run, and 13579 sections. Also, passing Dragons early in the Charleston can be risky for you and helpful for someone else.

And, of course, Flowers are always too risky to pass this early before you know where you’re heading.

Once you keep all of that, you’re left with three “maybe” tiles: 6 Crak, 6 Bam, West.

Passing a pair of sixes can feel uncomfortable, but this is one of those moments where you remind yourself what the Charleston is for: building your hand. If you don’t want to take a chance on a risky pass, you could abandon Consecutive Run, Line 4, and pass the 4 Crak instead.

If you were to go with the Insider’s calculated risk, keep an eye out in case someone uses them to chase an Any Like Numbers setup.

❌ Answer B passes two odd tiles, which limits plays for the 13579 Section, especially this early.

❌ Answer C gives away the 9 Dot and both Craks, limiting possibilities in both the Consecutive Run and Odds sections.

❌ Answer D releases the Green Dragon too soon. It may be needed later, and it’s risky to pass Dragons early in the Charleston.

Beginner Takeaway

Early in the Charleston, keep tiles that support multiple directions. Protect your flexibility, and don’t overthink risky moves. Recognize the risk and prepare for it.

Advanced Moves

If you’re comfortable juggling several Sections at once and want to keep the West for a NEWS hand, you can shift your pass. In that case, consider letting go of the 9 Dot instead and aiming for an odd-numbered hand that doesn't need it. For example, 13579, Line 5 (FFF 135 7777 9999) could work your 7 Bam and a 9 Crak if one comes around, and you’d still have plenty of flexibility in the 13579 section by using Dots for the low end (135) and Bams for the high end (579).

Nice job spotting that possibility!
