💡 Table Wisdom
Looking Out for Each Other
Know the rules, but keep the joy! Some players think that ‘playing by the rules’ turns a friendly Mah Jongg get together into a cut-throat battle. This isn’t true. You can play by the rules and still bring a loving, caring mood into your game.
It starts with respect and looking out for others at the table.
A few simple habits help keep the game friendly, fair, and enjoyable for everyone.
Announce Any Table Rules
Decide on any house rules before play begins. This includes options like “hot or cold wall” or higher penalties for discards during the last wall.
If you’re playing with a new or custom set, review the tiles together. Pay attention to Flowers, the 1 Bam, Dragons, and Jokers, since they’re often designed differently. Clear expectations prevent confusion later.
Speak Clearly When You Discard
Place your tile face up in the center and announce it. If someone has difficulty hearing, face them so they can follow along. Clear discards reduce missed calls and help the game flow smoothly.
Wait Your Turn
Keep your hands behind your rack until it’s time to pick. Don’t hover over the wall or speed-rack. Moving too quickly can block others from seeing or hearing the discard. Your patience demonstrates courtesy and respect for others.
Handle Joker Exchanges With Respect
Ask before exchanging. Hand your tile to the player so they can confirm the match, then return the Joker. This small step helps avoid mistakes and fosters trust.
Pause for Clarity
When a call, Charleston pass, or scoring question comes up, slow down. Confirm as a group before continuing.
Remember: once a tile touches the table, it is considered a discard. And if racking and calling happen together, the caller gets the tile. If no one is clear on the situation or the rule governing it, put the disagreement aside and check the rules later.
Takeaway
A respectful table builds trust. Look out for one another, and every game will feel fair and enjoyable.
🖐🏻 A Hand to Play
Which tiles would complete your opponent’s hand?
Mah Jongg Challenge
Your opponent has several exposures on the table, and their hand is almost complete. The question is: which tiles would finish their hand?
Pay close attention to what’s already exposed and think about what’s missing.
Make your choice, cast your vote, and see how your answer stacks up against others.

If you’ve seen several new Mah Jongg cards pop up lately and wondered what makes each unique, you’re not alone. Here’s the simple way to think about it.
The Official: NMJL card
The National Mah Jongg League card is the official standard for American Mah Jongg. It’s what leagues and tournaments use, and it’s what players from different groups use to sit down together using a shared, standardized rule set.
A new card is released each spring, but the overall scoring stays consistent year to year. This is the 89th year of the NMJL card, and that continuity is what keeps most players returning to it.
So why are there other cards?
Other cards exist because players want options.
Some focus on accessibility and layout. Some explore different scoring ideas. Some invest in design, durability, or customer experience. These cards don’t replace the NMJL. They exist to meet different player needs, especially outside of formal league and tournament play.
Here are the most common ones you’ll see in 2026:

Which one should you play?
There’s no single “best” card. No matter which card you play, understanding the hands and building strategy matters far more than the card itself.
A good rule of thumb is to support the companies that communicate clearly and invest in the player experience. Respect for the community matters.
❓Ask Auntie Anything
⬅️ Last Week’s Question
Auntie, We have a player who is unfriendly and no one wants to play with her. As the team leader I struggle with everyone requesting not to sit with her. How do I handle this without hurting her feelings?
- Anonymous
🥠 Auntie’s Advice 🥠
🗨 My friend, an unfriendly player does not have to unsettle the whole table. You are allowed to meet the moment as it happens. A calm line like, “Ouch, that wasn’t kind,” said without heat and repeated when needed, sets a clear social cue without shaming her. It also reminds the others that they do not have to shrink around her behavior. A small truth spoken gently often does more good than all the managing in the world.
📢 Readers’ Responses 📢
🗨 As a leader, to resolve that issue, I have players roll the dice. The higher ones play together and so on. This makes it random and in the hands of the roller so the leader doesn't get flack.
- Tannis
🗨 I have this situation. I generally try to play with her and gently point out to her when she aggravates others at the table in hopes over time she will moderate her own behavior. I also control the calendar and limit her invites 🙂

🗨 Dear Auntie, We had a player who was dithery and slow, and no one wanted to play with her. So I asked her to host a Mah Jongg game at her own home where expectations were lower and she relaxed. The other players got to know her and like her better, and they became more forgiving. She relaxed enough to play faster. Maybe meeting at the unfriendly player’s home for a game would give a few people a glimpse into her life and maybe Unfriendly would drop her guard a bit?? Sometimes, unfriendly people are hurting people. And, to be honest, some people are best avoided altogether! But we are a church group, so I try extra hard to create fellowship. I also pair myself with the unpopular players to bring at least one smile to the table. Love your newsletter.

➡️ This Week’s Question
We have a member in our group who is always rushing everyone the moment we start drawing tiles, during the Charleston, and throughout the game. What is the best way to deal with this? Should we try a sand timer?

The 4 of us (plus subs) started playing 🀄️ weekly in our homes during covid when we were angry at being unable to go out. Some of us were self-taught by following a book. We are in Venice, FL and enjoy a mid-play cocktail and healthy snacks. We also go out to lunch to celebrate special occasions. We always have a lot of fun! Love the newsletter!
