01/12/26 🀄 Secrets for Easier Mah Jongg Wins

🧨Happy Mah Jongg Monday!

One of the things that makes this community special is how much players genuinely want to improve their game.

Our Practice Sessions bring that spirit to life. They’re live, small-group sessions where players practice with the current card together, ask questions, and learn by doing.

They’re less than the cost of a lesson and often more useful if your goal is to play better at the table. If you haven’t tried one yet, this is a good week to jump in.

💡 Table Wisdom

Is it worth $1.50 or $3.60, just because I picked it myself?

Knowing how Mah Jongg scoring works makes it easier to play and win with confidence. The rules are simple, and once you know them, you’ll spot more opportunities to maximize the value of every hand you play.

Basic rules to remember

  • The value of each hand is listed on the right side of the Line.

  • If you pick your own Mah Jongg, all players pay double the hand’s value.

  • If you Mah Jongg on a discard, the discarder pays double, while the others pay single.

  • A Joker-free Mah Jongg doubles the value of the hand again:

    • Discarder pays four times the value.

    • Other players pay double.

    • If it’s self-picked, all players pay four times the value.

  • Singles and Pairs hands are the exception since the higher value is already built in.

Let’s answer the title question: Is it worth $1.50 or $3.60 if you pick it yourself?
Yes. A standard 25¢ hand becomes $1.50 when self-picked. A Joker-free, self-picked 30¢ hand is worth $3.60.

The table below breaks it all down:

Takeaway:

Understanding scoring helps you choose wisely. Sometimes discarding a Joker to play for a Joker-free hand doubles your win. Other times, waiting to self-pick can turn an ordinary hand into your most significant payout.

🖐🏻 A Hand to Play

What's the total value the player should receive?

One of your opponents just threw you Mah Jongg. Congratulations, it’s time to collect!

According to the NMJL’s Mah Jongg Made Easy guide, “Players must announce the value of their own hand.” That means you need to know how to calculate your winnings correctly.

Here’s the hand, straight from the 2025 NMJL card:

Your challenge: figure out the total value you’ll collect, using the rules for playing for fun (non-tournament style).

Once you’ve made your calculation, cast your vote to see how your answer compares with others. Are you confident in your total?

📲 A New Scoring App is Coming Soon

The American Mah Jongg Association is the home for American Mah Jongg players, whether you play at home, in leagues, or in tournaments. It also builds helpful tools designed to support players at every stage of play.

One of the tools we’ve been working on is a scoring app, and it’s coming soon.

The app calculates points automatically using the National Mah Jongg League card and updates results instantly, so there’s no more paper score sheets, spreadsheets, or waiting around.

For competitive leagues and tournaments, this means real time scores and season long tracking, without manual calculation.

For everyday play, the app simply does the work, so players can focus on the game and know exactly where they stand at the end of each round.

Players and organizers who want early notification can join the waitlist below.

This week’s top questions:
1️⃣ If two players call for a tile at the same time, and the player who is not next tries to take the tile, what happens?
2️⃣ If a player gets Mah Jongg with no Jokers and it is self-drawn, does the value of the hand get doubled twice?

Ask Auntie Anything

⬅️ Last Week’s Question
Auntie, What do you do when a particular player is overly boisterous and is full of "I-I-I" and "me-me-me" stories?
- Lynne J.

🥠 Auntie’s Advice 🥠

🗨 My dear, you cannot confront a chatterbox without hurting her. The kinder way is to name the value, not the flaw. Instead of “you talk too much about yourself,” try “I want to make sure everyone gets a turn to update us.” Then invite someone else to begin. It shifts the room without shaming her and keeps the harmony.

📢 Readers’ Responses 📢

🗨 Some birds sing the same song. Me-me-me  then, I-I-I  Don’t get catty, let them sing!
- Debbee C.

🗨 You may need to set a certain amount of time before you start playing for everyone to share what’s been going on since you last met.  After the time is up and it’s time to play, everyone needs to be a part of the game.  Conversation should be kept to a minimum.
- Donna

🗨 Mah Jongg is a social game. Whenever you are interacting with another human you are dealing with who they are. If that doesn't work for you, you might consider solitaire or computer Mah Jongg.

➡️ This Week’s Question
We have a player who is unfriendly and no one wants to play with her. As the team leader I struggle with everyone requesting not to sit with her. How do I handle this without hurting her feelings?

📸 Get In the Spotlight

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share how the Indian Valley Library Mah Jongg group in Telford, PA enjoys a monthly brunch together before we play!
We make a reservation at a nearby restaurant, a player volunteers to be the hostess, chooses a fun theme, brings a small favor, and we all get to dress up coordinating with the theme. So far, we’ve celebrated Valentine’s Day, Easter, and Cinco de Mayo!— Kathleen A.

We meet once a week after our yoga class at the CHEER Community Center in Milton, DE. We’re all fairly new to the game and enjoy learning from each other. And yes, we all wear our Mah Jongg earrings for extra luck.
